Search for a WSDC class and most of what comes back teaches a different sport. World Schools debate is a specific format: teams of three, eight-minute speeches, a four-minute reply, points of information, and a season split between prepared motions and impromptu motions built in one hour with no coach in the room. Plenty of excellent debate programs teach Public Forum, Lincoln-Douglas, or British Parliamentary instead, and a student can train hard in one of those for a year without ever hearing a reply speech. This list only includes programs that genuinely teach World Schools, and we verified the format on every provider's own site before including it.

We are not pretending otherwise: this is our list, we teach this format every week, and we think the honest move is to tell you exactly what we offer and then hand you the same checklist we would use to judge anyone, ourselves included. Every other program below is independent of us, and enrollment details, dates, and fees change often, so confirm them with each provider directly.
How we judged
Format fidelity: The class debates actual World Schools rounds, with reply speeches and points of information, not a rebadged version of another format.
Judged practice: Students debate real rounds that end in a reasoned adjudication mapped to the official marking criteria (40 percent content, 40 percent style, 20 percent strategy) plus written feedback they take home.
Impromptu training: Half the preliminary rounds at the world championship are impromptu, so a serious class makes students build cases on a one-hour clock without the coach.
Coaching record: No official WSDC coaching certification exists anywhere, so a coach's own competitive and judging history in this format is the signal that matters.
Openness: A provider confident in its classroom lets you watch a session before you pay.

These three attributes predict progress better than any brochure, so here is what each provider publicly commits to. "Not published" does not mean a program lacks the thing; it means you should ask before enrolling, and the quality of the answer is itself a signal.

1. Atlantic Ivy Debate Academy (Dubai, in person + online squads)
Ours, and listed first because this is our list, so judge it hardest. Our Junior Debate Academy and Senior Debate Academy run weekly two-hour sessions at our centre in Barsha Heights, capped at eight students, and every single session includes a live debate with adjudication and written feedback, because students improve by debating, not by listening. Seniors work motion analysis, casebuilding under time pressure, and the reply speech on the same weekly loop our online competition squads use, and graduates feed into our Harvard Invitational and WSDC squads. The first session of any class is a free trial, which is our answer to the openness criterion above: come and watch us meet our own checklist.
Best for: Families in Dubai who want weekly in-person WSDC training with a judged round every session.
Considerations: The group classes run in Dubai only, so families elsewhere are limited to our online squads. And we ranked ourselves first, so discount accordingly and use the trial to check.
2. WSDC Prep (online, United States)
Our sister academy, so the same disclosure applies. WSDC Prep teaches World Schools online in small live groups for American and international students, with a Foundation track for first seasons and a Competition Team for students already on the circuit, both built around judged rounds and written feedback after every session. It also maintains a free public bank of more than 12,000 real tournament motions, which is worth bookmarking whichever program you choose, because it makes impromptu practice at home essentially free.
Best for: American and international students who want a weekly online World Schools system rather than one-off sessions.
Considerations: Class times anchor to US Eastern time, which suits the Americas and Europe more comfortably than Asian evenings. Same family as us, so apply the same discount you apply to entry one.
3. Capstone Debate (Hong Kong, in person + online)
The strongest independent WSDC academy in Asia that we know of. Capstone Debate is built around the World Schools format rather than offering it as a side dish, runs in-person classes in Hong Kong and online ones beyond it, and organises students into age divisions from primary through senior secondary. Its coaching staff includes people with national-squad coaching and championship adjudication backgrounds, and its students regularly appear in Hong Kong's national-team selection pipeline.
Best for: Hong Kong families, and students aiming at the HK squad pipeline specifically.
Considerations: Pricing is not published, so budget conversations start with their placement assessment rather than a rate card.
4. Debate Spaces (online, free)
The best value on this list and it is not close. Debate Spaces is an American nonprofit that runs free online academy sessions through the school year for students aged roughly ten to seventeen, drawing participants from dozens of countries, plus free summer programming. Sessions are less frequent than a weekly academy, so treat it as a supplement or an on-ramp rather than a full training system, but for a family testing whether a child likes the format, it is the obvious first stop.
Best for: Trying the format at zero cost, and supplementing a school team with international rounds.
Considerations: Monthly, not weekly, so it is a supplement rather than a training system, and instructor credentials are not published the way commercial academies publish theirs.
5. Harvard Debate Council Summer Workshops (United States, summer)
The strongest World Schools summer credential in America. The Harvard Debate Council Summer Workshops run a dedicated World Schools division, residential at Harvard, whose named faculty have coached the USA Debate national team. A camp is two intense weeks, not a season, so it suits students who already debate and want a step change, and it carries the price tag you would expect; check the current one on their site.
Best for: Committed competitors who want the deepest World Schools coaching bench available at a US camp.
Considerations: The most expensive option on this list, and two residential weeks suit a student who already debates, not a beginner testing the water.
6. UTNIF World Schools (United States, summer)
The University of Texas National Institute in Forensics runs a World Schools camp of its own at UT Austin, rather than a token lab inside a Policy institute, with one-week and two-week options. A good fit for American students who want a dedicated WS camp without the northeast price point.
Best for: US students who want a dedicated World Schools camp at roughly a third of the flagship price.
Considerations: One to two weeks is an accelerator, not a season, and the university's site blocks most preview browsing, so expect to email for details.
7. Cornell International Summer Debate Camp (United States, summer)
Cornell's international debate camp teaches the World Schools format from first principles through to a closing tournament, with separate middle school and high school streams, faculty topic lectures, small-group coaching, and daily practice debates. One of the few university camps that welcomes international students into a WS-format program explicitly.
Best for: International students who want a US university camp built entirely around the World Schools format.
Considerations: Enrollment windows are short and sessions fill; the commuter option is far cheaper but only realistic if you are already near Ithaca.
8. ESU Debate Academy (United Kingdom, summer)
The English-Speaking Union's Debate Academy is a week-long residential summer school for ages fourteen to eighteen with a dedicated World Schools format track, taught within the organisation that helped build schools debating in Britain, with bursaries available. It has not run in every recent year, so confirm the current summer is actually happening before you plan around it.
Best for: UK students aged 14–18, especially those who need a bursary-supported route into serious training.
Considerations: It has skipped years before, and fees are not published, so treat it as an option to verify rather than a plan to build on.
9. World Schools Debate Academy, Kranjska Gora (Slovenia, summer)
Run by the Slovenian debate organisation Za in proti, the World Schools Debate Academy pairs a training week in the Julian Alps with a closing tournament, groups students by experience level, and brings in international trainers. The rare European option that is purely World Schools, and a natural pick for students who want tournament rounds against debaters from many countries.
Best for: European and travelling students who want a genuinely international field and a real tournament at the end of the week.
Considerations: Fees are not published, and it involves travel to alpine Slovenia, which is either a drawback or half the appeal depending on your family.
10. Speech and Debate Academy (India + UAE, online)
The Speech and Debate Academy teaches World Schools and British Parliamentary in small online groups, tiered by grade from primary through senior school, with in-person events in Indian cities. For families in India, and for UAE families who want an online alternative, it is the most established WS-teaching academy serving the region alongside our own classes.
Best for: Families in India, and UAE families comparing online options across providers.
Considerations: World Schools shares the timetable with several other formats and speech events, so confirm your child's group actually debates WS rounds, not a general speaking mix.
What the pricing actually buys
Sticker prices mislead here because the two kinds of program sell different units. Year-round classes sell teaching hours: our own academy works out to AED 100 (about US$27) per hour, since a term is AED 1,600 for eight two-hour sessions, and WSDC Prep publishes US$27–35 per hour depending on the class. Anything in that band from an established academy is normal market pricing; well above it, you should be able to see what the premium buys in the table above.
Camps sell an immersion week, and residential prices bundle housing and meals. You can see the size of that bundle in the gaps: Harvard's 2026 World Schools workshop was US$4,149 residential against US$3,049 for commuters, and Cornell's camp was US$3,750 residential against US$1,000 commuter. Comparing a camp's sticker to a class's sticker tells you nothing; comparing judged rounds per dollar of tuition tells you most of what matters.
And the free tier is genuinely free, not a teaser: Debate Spaces charges nothing, the NSDA's Springboard scrimmages charge nothing, and national squad trials charge nothing. A motivated student with a school team and those three could train seriously on a budget of zero; what paid programs add is weekly structure, stable coaching, and written feedback that compounds.
Close, but check the fine print
Three programs nearly made the list and deserve a precise description. DebateDrills is one of the strongest online academies in America, but its club teams compete in Public Forum and Lincoln-Douglas, and it currently offers World Schools only as private one-on-one tutoring. VBI offers World Schools at selected summer sessions only, so confirm your specific session carries it before enrolling. The University of Houston's Honors debate workshop includes World Schools among half a dozen formats, which suits format-curious students more than committed WS competitors.
And a warning that saves families real money: many of the most famous names in debate education do not teach World Schools at all. Capitol Debate, the National Symposium for Debate, Stanford's summer institute, and most university Policy institutes are excellent at their own formats and absent from this one. If a brochure does not say World Schools, it almost certainly is not.
The free routes worth knowing
The bodies that run the format offer some of the best training in it. In the United States, USA Debate selects a national team and a development team through an open application each spring, and the NSDA's Springboard series runs free online World Schools scrimmages that non-members can enter. Most other countries, including Canada, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Qatar, and India, select their world championship squads through open trials run by the national debating body. Even for a student years away from that level, the trials calendar is useful because it defines what a training season should build toward.

What age should a child start World Schools debate?
World Schools is a secondary-school format, and most dedicated WSDC classes start between ages nine and eleven; our own junior academy starts at eleven, and Debate Spaces takes students from ten. Younger children are better served by public speaking classes that build the speaking and structure muscles first, then move into the format itself. Are online WSDC classes as good as in-person ones?
For the core skills, yes: casebuilding, rebuttal, and weighing are taught, practised, and judged well over video, and online widens the opponent pool beyond one city. What online cannot fully replicate is commanding a physical room, which is why the strongest path we see combines a weekly class, online or in person, with in-person tournaments or a summer camp.
How do I check a program actually teaches the WSDC format?
Ask whether students debate three against three with reply speeches, whether marking follows the 40/40/20 content, style, and strategy split, and whether impromptu motions are prepped on a one-hour clock without the coach. A provider that answers in Public Forum or parliamentary vocabulary teaches a different format, however good it is at that one.
